"Interviewer: The people that you are promoting that do have those skills, have you found out where they found those skills? Was it with Cub Scouts or Girl Scouts? Or was there something that we can start developing at a younger age?

Employer: A lot of times, it might have been involvement in sports. It might have been Boy Scouts, it might have been Girl Scouts.

Interviewer: So, these are probably mental skills at a younger age that...

Employer: It could be, in some cases. Well, on campuses, if you have somebody that was the head of the Investment Club, they probably know how to lead. Those types of folks. Folks that have led, that have interacted with people. I think more of those types of opportunities for people to lead, I think, as adults would be helpful because then they can apply that when they get into the work."

"Employer: When it comes to going up the ranks—the idea to lead people—we have to train that. But you can tell there hasn't been a lot of that. The teamwork, the ability to work well on a team, and lead a team—that you have to develop because it hasn't appeared.

Interviewer: So, that piece of the training infrastructure was left out? You're doing all of that?

Employer: Right. We promote from within. Of course, one of the problems you have is that you don't have enough people with those skills to be able to lead a team. It's difficult."

"Interviewer: I think the other question, though, would be would you like to see a course—part of the core curriculum—be leadership skills? I don't know if you can teach that.

Employer: You just have to do that."

"We look a lot at extracurricular activities and what people have done in leadership. Are they a participant or did they lead those organizations?" Metro
"They could be a leader of a customer service group, an administrative group, a marketing group...those kinds of areas." Metro
"I think that's where our shortage usually is—in those soft skills. If they're doing everything online and not having the ability to take classes that are more interactive and that have a team environment and that create the opportunity to work in small groups, then that's something that we have to teach once they get here. And we don't want to take the time to do that. We expect that that should be a part of their learning environment prior to getting to us.

Understanding prioritization, time management, leadership—all of those things that I think are very core in the first couple of years at school—and if they're doing everything online, they're not getting that interaction with their counterparts. They're not learning how to work with others that may not work the same way that they work. So, that's a huge component."

"For us, they have to have the communication skills. And I would say leadership skills, too." Metro
"They've got to have some kind of leadership skills. It could be coming from college activities or those kinds of things." Metro
"Leaders, we just want leaders." Metro
"As far as technical skills, we're looking at moving more toward paperless workflows, SharePoint, and things like that in our company. And I know that the accounting business—or the auditing business—has done a lot of paperless in the auditing function, but I don't know how your back-offices work. But I see a huge opportunity for a lot of companies to move toward that: paperless workflows and creating efficiencies. But we don't have those skills in order to get there." Metro
"We feel candidates are sometimes missing very basic soft skills—things like communication skills and critical thinking skills—and how to turn those skills into more of a leadership role." Metro
