"I think in public accounting, it's a little bit easier for us. If they're a CPA, they're required to have continuing professional education. And some of the firms do that by sending their folks to external CPA activities. And some larger firms have an internal corporate learning department that sets that kind of stuff up. So, I think the public accounting world might be a little bit easier to keep up with. However, I don't think...really is there a business profession out there that doesn't require people to continue their education? I mean, HR laws change all the time and we have to stay up-to-date with them. Accounting in the tax code changes all the time. There are so many regulations that people have to keep up with. I don't know that there is a profession out there that doesn't require continuing professional education if it's in the business realm or even the technical realm. So, maybe just reminding students while they're in college, 'Your learning doesn't stop here. You're getting your degree, which is amazing, and you're going to be able to get a career, but the learning doesn't stop. So, hopefully you have a thirst for college.'" Metro
"Employer: Keeping up with changes in IRS coding, that's just taken for granted that that's what you need to do. I mean, that's the bare minimum. It's about continually honing your skill set and what you can offer your clients—and focusing on a certain area or something like that. CPAs have to do these things, and that's just the bare minimum.

Interviewer: And that's required?

Employer: It's required, absolutely."

"We do a lot of our trainings—technical trainings—internally. And sometimes we use outside vendors, but the majority is in-house." Metro
"The staff who are doing more routine work and who are satisfied where they are, those staff get some basic training, but they don't get the extensive training." Metro
"We use some Benchmark Learning, the Science Museum of Minnesota as well as [others] for some more technical training." Metro
"Employer: I have an employee who took a couple of classes at college, but that's about it. In order for her to succeed, I definitely need her to have at least a two-year accounting degree. So, she's kind of an accounting specialist and A/P clerk. And where she's lacking is in her computer skills. So, it's an interesting continuum, this IT, computer, Microsoft programming...I mean, you kind of need to know more than that Microsoft is a package of software. She doesn't understand—when I explain something—why it works that way. So, maybe we need a higher level of thinking about Microsoft, too, for accountants. That's what I need her to do...and critical thinking and the ability to follow instructions. I need a two-year accountant to be able to do these things in order for us to move ahead—and also to comply with the city of Minneapolis and their multiple reporting and funding requirements. There are a bunch of IT things I need her to be able to do, so I can focus on other things. So, it's a huge continuum on lots of stuff.

Interviewer: Tell us about her educational background before her classes.

Employer: Just high school. What's interesting is it was an alternative high school. So, that's an opportunity.

Interviewer: Is she preparing to complete a certificate at [a college]?

Employer: That's what I'm going to present to her. I'm going to say, 'I don't believe you're going to be successful in what we need you to do here without that certificate.'"
