Training Options

Do you think going back to school will take too long? You might be surprised at how many options you have.

The education options below can take a few weeks to four years to finish. Some students need more time to finish a program.

Education Options

Educational Option Description
Online Learning You can take one course. Or you can earn a certificate or a degree working online. For some students, online learning makes it easier to go to school.
License States require knowledge and skills for some jobs. It is against the law to work in these jobs without a license. These workers need to update their training to keep up their license.
Apprenticeship Program This is a training plan based on employers' needs. Students learn skills on the job in addition to classroom time. Students are paid to learn on the job. Sometimes they are supported by trade or labor groups.
Certificate These are academic programs that are usually completed in less than two years. These programs provide specialized training that leads to a specific job.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program ABE programs serve students ages 16 and older who are not enrolled in school and who want to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, math, listening, and speaking. They also provide some pre-employment training.
Short-Term Training Short-term training means anything that takes one year or less to complete. This can include seminars, workshops, continuing education, personal enrichment courses, non-credit courses, and some college diploma and certificate programs.
Associate Degree This degree normally requires at least two but less than four years of full-time college work.
Bachelor's Degree This degree normally requires at least four but not more than six years of full-time college work.
